Localized Flooding Possible: Put Safety First

The National Weather Service has a flood watch in effect for eastern and downeast Maine through today. Severe storms and heavy rains in these areas may cause small rivers and streams to overflow their banks today. Ponding of water on roads, especially at intersections and underpasses, can lead to localized flooding.

MEMA offers these flood and flash flood safety tips:

  • Avoid all flooded roadways. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to pass safely, or the road may be washed away beneath the water. If a road is barricaded, take an alternate route.
  • If you come on a road that is flooded and not marked, please notify local officials.
  • Keep away from fast-moving streams. Swiftly moving water is extremely powerful and can easily overpower a person.
  • Keep children and pets inside and away from flooded streets, culverts, and streams.

You can also report high water or blocked roadways directly to the National Weather Service toll-free at 1-877-633-6772 when it is safe for you to do so.
