Sometimes asking for help is a sign of strength

If you, or someone in your family, have a disability, you probably take pride in living independently and taking care of yourself. However, in a major emergency, there might be circumstances where you would need help. Talk confidentially with your local fire chief, or emergency medical services provider before any emergency happens, and make a plan for getting the help you need. Making a plan keeps you and your family in control of your own safety.

  • Develop a personal disaster plan
  • Give copies of your emergency information list, medical information list, disability-related supplies and special eqipment list and personal disaster plan to your 'support network.'

Make sure that you have the following items. If not, stop by the hardware store.

  • Signal flare
  • Compass
Also, extra medications or prescriptions marked 'emergency use.'
