Think nothing ever happens in your neighborhood?

Visit older residents who have lived in your town for a long time. Ask them about floods, fires, other disasters. Ask to see pictures if they have them.

Visit your local library and go through old history books and newspapers. The stories are there to be found.

Knowledge is power! When you understand what can happen in your state or your neighborhood you have taken the first step in becoming more resilient.

Here are some resources to get you started:

Risk Assessment for Natural Disasters:

Maine's State Mitigation Plan contains an ehaustive section on the history of Maine Disasters. Look for the Risk Assessment section.

Federally Declared Disasters and Emergencies

FEMA maintains an archive of Maine events for which we have received a Presidential declaration of disaster or emergency, from 1954 to the present. Events since 1998 have press releases and other information on the event, the more recent the disaster, the more information.

A Fun Site:

GenDisasters.com: Events that touched our ancestors' lives.

THis is a section of a privately maintained geneaology website that invites its vistors to share pictures and newpaper articles about major fires and other disasters. Please note: This is not a State website. But it's a fun visit.
