1987 Flood: Kennebec River in Hallowell

The Kennebec River crested in Augusta, two miles upstream from Hallowell, in the early morning of April 2, 1987. Although water levels had already dropped several feet, this community's entire business district was under water.

All photos courtesy of Maine DOT The large brick building on the right in this photo is the Cotton Mill apartments, occupied by elderly tenants. Luckily, the waters did not quite reach the building, and the tenants did not have to be evacuated.

The west side of Water Street is forlorn ... ... while the east side has an eerie, sad beauty.

Water Street south of downtown has merged with the river. Looking north up Water Street, we see a ghost town instead of a lively small city.
