1987 Flood: Kennebec River in Augusta

The 1987 flood filled downtown Augusta with filthy water and debris. These photos were taken April 2, 1987. The river crested at 5:00 am that morning, at 34.5 feet. Flood stage on the Kennebec at Augusta is 13 feet.

At the corner of Bond and Water Streets, directional signs point the way for a different sort of transportation. (Note: we do not condone the absence of life jackets on the occupants of the canoe). Augusta Public Safety personnel view the shattered remnants of buildings swept down the river.

Steps to the Front Street parking lot have become stairs to nowhere. The canoe heads back up Bond Street, alone with forlorn, water-logged buildings.
