1987 Flood: Kennebec River in Gardiner

The 1987 flood brought economic devastation to many communities. These photos document the impact to downtown Gardiner, on the Kennebec River.

Audience gone, Water Street belongs to canoists.	From the air, looking south from the Gardiner/Randolph bridge, the incursions of the Kennebec River on stores (to the right) and neighborhoods (downstream to the left) can be clearly seen.

The Shop n Save Supermarket (now Hannafords) in Gardiner and the surrounding businesses, are inundated.	Another view of the flooded businesses: floods have an enduring, in some instances catastrophic, effect on the economy.
