Issues
I am a strong supporter of holding criminals accountable for their
actions. As a member of the Criminal Justice Committee, I want to continue
our work to lower the rate of domestic violence in Maine, the highest
in the nation. We have taken some steps already, and must continue
efforts in education and the training of police officers. Domestic
violence is not a private matter between consenting adults –
it is a crime that must be prosecuted. I also believe we need to do a better job of caring for mental
health patients and making sure they do not end up in our jails
when there are better ways to care for them. Jails are an expensive
and inappropriate way to deal with the problem of mental health.
Limited jail space should be dedicated to the violent offenders
who deserve to be there. I am a strong supporter of efforts to increase access to health
insurance and lower prescription drug costs.

Legislation
I was proud to co-sponsor LD
1266 which protects victims of domestic violence by clarifying
the length of probation for convicted abusers. I also supported LD
404, a bill that limits the transfer of handguns to minors. More than 70,000 Americorps volunteers have provide vital services
and support to our nations schools and nonprofit agencies in what
many call a domestic Peace Corps. When Congress and the president
sought to severely cut those funds, I sponsored a resolution
calling on Congress to continue funding for Americorps. Click on the buttons below to see all bills and joint resolutions
and orders I sponsored or cosponsored this session, as well as
legislative sentiments that honor and recognize people from our
district and throughout the state.
