Rep. Canavan
Rep.
Marilyn Canavan is serving her fourth consecutive term in the
House of Representatives. She chairs the Government Oversight
Committee and also serves on the Committee on Insurance and Financial
Services.
As the former executive director of the Commission on Governmental
Ethics and Election Practices, Rep. Canavan helped author Maine’s
Clean Election Act. She is the state director of Women’s
Action for New Directions. In her hometown,
she serves as board member for Kennebec Valley Mental Health
and is also a member of the Kennebec Valley Community College
General Advisory Council.
Rep. Canavan has received many distinguished honors. Most recently
she was selected as a “Pacesetter” by the Women Legislators’ Lobby – a
nonpartisan network of women state legislators working to influence
federal policy – in recognition of her strong commitment
to excellence in public service and her invaluable work to address
complex and challenging issues. Rep. Canavan has also received
the “Legislator of the Year” award from the Maine
Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers, “Woman
of the Year” award from the Waterville Professional/Business
Women and the Rising Tide Award from the Maine People’s
Alliance.
Rep. Canavan is married and has five children and six grandchildren.
She enjoys poetry, power walking, piano, and the good company
of her family.
