About Rep. Hinck

Representative Jon Hinck is an attorney in Portland who works on behalf of workers, consumers and the environment. He recently spent three years with the Natural Resources Council of Maine, Maine's leading environmental advocacy group. With NRCM, Jon worked to promote renewable energy, control mercury pollution and remove chemical hazards from Maine schools. In 2004, he led a successful effort to enact a landmark electronic waste law that enables the environmentally sound recycling of old computers and TVs at manufacturer, not taxpayer, expense.

After getting a bachelor’s from the University of Pennsylvania, Jon worked for Greenpeace for 10 years, including as campaign director for Greenpeace International in charge of the group’s worldwide program. He was instrumental in building Greenpeace USA into one of the largest environmental groups in the U.S. and spearheaded major efforts in marine ecology, energy and toxics issues. In 1990 Jon earned a JD from the University of California Berkeley. In private law practice, first in California and later in Maine, he concentrated on pro-environment and pro-consumer litigation including important work in major environmental cases such as the Exxon Valdez oil spill litigation and MTBE groundwater pollution cases.

Jon's experience includes serving as the acting attorney general for the Republic of Palau, a Pacific Island nation. In 1996 he was a delegate at the Kyoto Convention. Jon has taught environmental law as an adjunct professor at the University of Southern Maine and is a member of Portland's Sustainability Task Force. He is married to Juliet Browne, also a Portland attorney. They have a 11-year-old daughter.
