About Rep. Cooper

Rep. Janice Cooper is serving her first term in the Maine House of Representatives, and has been assigned to both the Insurance and Financial Services Committee and the Environment and Natural Resources Committee. She and her family moved to Yarmouth in 1997, where she founded the community arts education center, Firehouse Arts at Winslow Station, and currently serves as a Board Member.

A graduate of Vassar College and Yale Law School, Janice’s career involved the practice of law in small and large firms, working for Congress in Washington (on the House Judiciary Committee) and in the Portland office of Congressman Tom Allen.  She has also worked as an editor at “Legal Times”, a weekly newspaper based in Washington, and as a teacher in law school and as a guest lecturer in colleges and a substitute teacher in the Yarmouth School System.

Janice’s daughter, Becky, attended Yarmouth schools and graduated from McGill University. Becky died in 2011 in an accident in Micronesia where she had gone to teach English to local high school students. Janice and her husband, Bill Schaffer, established a scholarship fund for students and staff at a children’s center in Kenya where Becky had volunteered.
