Maine Department of Labor Veterans’ Rep, Larz Nelson was honored at the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Maine Chapter Annual Meeting last week. Nelson received the DAV Member of the Year Award for his work with the Disabled Veterans Outreach Program at the Augusta CareerCenter.
Maine Labor Commissioner Laura Fortman met with Nelson last week to congratulate him on the award and talk about his work with area veterans. He estimated that the number of veterans served through the CareerCenter has nearly doubled in recent years.
Many of the veterans he sees are younger National Guard Members who need a little extra help in finding jobs following active duty service in the Middle East. Nelson also discussed the challenges and rewards that come with serving Maine’s vulnerable population of homeless veterans.
