Home > Academic Transcripts from Closed Schools Updated 06/18/12 ACADEMIC TRANSCRIPTS FROM CLOSED MAINE SCHOOLSGetting a copy of an academic transcript from a Maine school which has closed.
Where are the records from closed post-secondary schools? When a Maine post-secondary school or college ceases operation, the Maine Department of Education (MDOE) seeks to acquire the academic records of the closed institution so that they will be preserved. However the Department does not have records from all closed schools. Look for the name of the school you attended in the table below. If it is listed, contact the holder of the school's records to request a copy of your transcript. If the closed school doesn't appear on this list, contact MDOE. It's possible that the Department may be able to help you find out if the records of the school are archived anywhere. How do I get a copy of my transcript from The Maine Department of Education? If the list below indicates that records from your school are located at MDOE, mail a request to: Transcript Request There is a $3.00 fee per copy. Please include payment with your request. Make checks payable to: Treasurer, State of Maine. You can also contact MDOE by email. Send requests for transcripts, and/or questions about obtaining them, to transcripts.highered@maine.gov. Please put the word "Transcript Request " in the subject line of your email. Please be advised that MDOE will not mail any transcript(s) until your payment received. The quality and the organization of the files that we obtain varies greatly from institution to institution. Sometimes it is very difficult to locate a requested record. Sometimes it is impossible. Therefore, we ask that you provide as much information as you can to help us in our search. In your written request please indicate:
Please note: MDOE will not be able to provide or verify any information not found on an academic transcript. For example, we would not have information about your attendance history at the closed school. What makes an "OFFICIAL" transcript different from an ordinary copy of my transcript? If you need to have an official transcript sent to a third party, such as a prospective employer, a certification body or another school, be sure to specify that in your request. We will send an official copy to any address that you specify. It will arrive in an envelope that has been signed on the flap. The transcript itself will bear an embossed stamp of the State Seal, as well as the signature of the Higher Education Specialist for the MDOE. IMPORTANT: If an academic institution or prospective employer has requested an "Official" Transcript, DO NOT UNSEAL THE ENVELOPE. Deliver it to the recipient unopened. If the envelope is open, many organizations will no longer consider the document to be official. If you do not specifically request an "official" transcript, we will send you an unsigned photocopy of your academic record.
What about Transcripts from closed secondary schools?Academic records for coursework taken at high schools which have closed will be found in either the offices of the current school administrative unit that is responsible for the geographic area in which the school was located, or in the municipal offices of the town in which the school was located. You can find Maine School Administrative Unit directories at http://www.maine.gov/education/schoolinfolist.htm. The data is searchable. Please note: Academic records from secondary schools are not archived by the Maine Department of Education.
