About Maine’s List of Non-Accredited Post-Secondary Schools
The Department of Education has compiled a list of post-secondary schools that are not accredited. We have made every effort to make this list accurate, but we urge you not to depend on it as your only source of information. Please investigate all possible resources when choosing a school. You will find many links to helpful ones within the pages of this web site.
Although we plan to update the list regularly, it should never be considered to be complete. Existing degree mills disappear, and new ones are created, at a rapid rate -- especially on the Internet.

The list is also available as a PDF or a Microsoft RTF file.

Where can I find information about U.S. Schools that ARE accredited?
There are two searchable databases on the Internet, which contain information about accredited institutions.
- Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) - Database of Institutions and Programs Accredited by Recognized United States Accrediting Organizations.
Please note that you must agree to the terms of CHEA’s User Agreement before you can access the data. (Scroll down to the bottom of the page.)
http://www.chea.org/search/
- The US Department of Education also offers a searchable database, however the CHEA database may be more reliable. http://www.ope.ed.gov/accreditation/Search.asp
Acknowledgements
The Maine Department of Education gratefully acknowledges assistance provided by both the Oregon Office of Degree Authorization and the State of Michigan Department of Civil Service for sharing resources related to state, national and international non-accredited institutions.
As more non-accredited institutions are identified, the Maine Department of Education will make the new information public by posting it on this website.
