TO:                  Superintendent of Schools

                        Maine High School Principals

FROM:            Susan A. Gendron, Commissioner

DATE:             August 27, 2004

SUBJECT:       Freedom’s Answer

In less than 80 days, Maine’s high school students intend to help set a national voter’s turnout record, and in all 50 states, “Freedom’s Answer” students, too young to vote but old enough to lead, are each seeking 10 voter pledges.  Can you imagine 2.5 million high school students delivering those 25,000,000 votes to the polls on November 2, 2004?  Our young will be empowered to become not just lifelong voters, but leaders as well.

As Commissioner of Education, I strongly support this non-partisan program.  I am encouraging every high school principal in Maine to visit the website and, while there, please register your school.

“Freedom’s Answer” is a “living” civics lesson that teaches responsibility and leadership.  The program costs nothing, but requires only a passion for the democratic process.  The website offers valuable curriculum resources to bring each civics/history classroom to life.

Please join the many State superintendents and high school principals who are helping their States’ students make history.
