Figure 8b. Formation of calving embayment in the Bangor quadrangle area. More rapid calving in deep water within the Penobscot River lowland formed a calving embayment. Calving processes acted as an ice drain, so ice flow converged toward the embayment. Based on the narrow width of the valley and the distribution of secondary erosional features, the initial width of the calving embayment was quite narrow (<2 km wide).
