Figure 3. Seashells are locally abundant in Maine's glacial-marine clays. This collection from a gravel pit south of Bangor includes species of clams, mussels, scallops, barnacles, and even a walrus toe bone (upper left). Some species still live on the Maine coast, while others typically inhabit colder North Atlantic waters near Greenland.
