Palermo Mine

Type of Mineral Deposit

A cluster of surface and underground workings in a granite pegmatite deposit. The Palermo Mine is world famous for the large number of rare phosphate minerals that have been found there. 150 minerals are known to occur at Palermo, 10 of which were first described from there: http://www.mindat.org/loc-3942.html.

Location

North Groton, Grafton County, New Hampshire

Directions

Starting from I-93 in Plymouth, take Exit 26 and drive west on Route 25 for about 8.5 miles. Turn L onto Halls Brook Rd. and go 3.7 miles to jct. with North Groton Rd. in the very small village of North Groton. Turn L onto North Groton Rd. and drive about 0.15 mi. to Edgar Albert Rd. Turn R onto this road, which leads to the mine. Go about 1.1 mi (keep right at any forks) to a clearing on a hillside just beyond a beaver pond. Park in clearing next to road and walk a little over a half mile to the mine. Keep to R at any junctions along the way. Car pooling is urged, and - if possible - it is best to car pool prior to reaching Edgar Allen Rd.

Logistics

  • Lottery sign-up period: May 6-12, 2013
  • Number of people that can be accommodated on this trip: 60
  • Trip Start Time: 9:00 AM (rain or shine)
  • Trip End Time: 4:00 PM
  • Required safety equipment: HARD HATS must be worn, along with sturdy footwear. No shorts or sandals. Eye protection (goggles or safety glasses) required for persons under 18 years old. No climbing on pit walls or large rocks.
