Other quarries on this property include the Nevel Quarry, Bell Pit, Martin Quarry, and Crooker Quarry. Besides tourmaline, many interesting and rare minerals have been found here, including beryl, columbite, cassiterite, eosphorite, lepidolite, spodumene, triphylite, and many many others. The dumps at the Bell Pit will be bulldozed especially for this trip.

Location

Newry, Oxford County, western Maine.

Directions

Go on U. S. Route 2 to the small village of Hanover, Maine (between Bethel and Rumford). Just west of Gordie Howe’s store in Hanover, turn north onto Howard Pond Rd. Go about 2.2 miles and turn right at sign for "Plumbago Mtn. Farm." Go up driveway to Bob Brown’s residence. Park here to consolidate vehicles and get further instructions on proceeding to the mines. Mine road continues straight ahead through field just beyond house. This trip requires a drive on a narrow dirt woods road for nearly 4 miles. Although the road is generally in good condition, there may be a few muddy spots or rough stretches with rocks in the road. Drivers may need a truck, SUV, or other vehicle with good ground clearance.
