Songo Pond Quarry, Albany, Maine


Type of Mineral Deposit

blue beryl crystalsActive quarry in granite pegmatite, known for its attractive blue beryl crystals. A variety of other minerals have also been found here. The quarry dumps will be bulldozed especially for this trip.

Location

Albany, Oxford County, southwestern Maine (see location map - 210 Kb PDF).

Directions

Quarry is accessed by a side road leading east from Route 5. There is now an easier route to the mine than shown on the location map. Drive on Route 5 to the north end of Songo Pond. Then turn right onto Baker Road, which passes the end of the pond and continues along the ridge east of the pond. Go 2 miles from Route 5 to # 433 Baker Rd. (log home), from which it is a short walk on Stone Lane to the Quarry. For additional information, visit the Songo Pond Mine website.
