The Future of Maine's Changing Beaches:

Diverse Interests and Common Goals

Concurrent Session I

10:30 - 11:15 a.m. at locations to be announced.

Shifting Sands: Trends in Maine's Beach Profiling Data

  • Stephen Dickson and Peter Slovinsky, Coastal Geologists, Maine Geological Survey

This session will highlight two recent beach studies completed by the Maine Geological Survey. The first presentation will highlight some of the findings from the first annual State of Maine's Beaches report. Data collected by beach profile volunteers has been analyzed by MGS; the presentation will provide a quick outline of the seasonal trends and changes that Maine's largest beaches undergo. The full report will be released concurrently at the conference.

The second presentation will preview new sea level rise inundation maps for beach and dune environments of southern and mid-coast Maine. The Maine Geological Survey has simulated areas of possible future inundation after a two-foot rise in sea level along Maine's larger beach systems. The presentation will highlight potential flooding impacts to both developed and undeveloped coastal sand dune areas, as well as potential changes to existing marsh habitats.
