Concurrent Session II
Climate Change and Sea Level Rise
Adaptations to Create Resilient Beach Communities
The scientific community has reached a strong consensus that the climate is changing, causing sea level rise that affects coastal areas. While governments seek to mitigate future climate change with regulatory action, this session will focus on how municipalities must work to address the current and potential impacts to their own communities through adaptation to sea level rise, regardless of the root causes of the observed changes.
The moderator will open with a discussion on municipal adaptation techniques developed in southern New England and New York, and how they can be applied to coastal communities of Maine. We will then look at the adaptation process through the eyes of Maine Town Planners, with a panel discussion of what actions they are taking, or would like to take, and what the primary obstacles are for getting started on adaptation. A major focus will be on the numerous stakeholders required to take action developing and/or implementing solutions with creativity, collaboration and compromise.
