Kennebunkport’s Watershed Improvement Program

Kennebunkport joined the Maine Healthy Beaches Program the summer of 2004. From the very beginning this program was administered by the town's Department of Public Health. The initial water sample results were alarmingly elevated. During the spring and summer of 2005 a massive research program was put place to help determine the source or sources of the problem. The research team included EPA, DEP, Maine Geological Survey, FB Environmental, Maine State Planning Office, Maine Healthy Beaches Program, Dept. of Agriculture, inland and shoreland wardens, town staff and volunteers.

One of the several issues that became clear was that we were in need of a public education program that encompassed the numerous personal habits that affect our watersheds. This presentation will offer what is referred to as DIY watershed improvement. Ms. Barrett will share the pros and cons regarding the program such as such as the Septic Social, River Day, Medication Drop Off, and Lawns & Lobsters. She will also share new summer activities including Best Practices, Accessory Apartment ordinance and the Boat Pump Out unit.
