Bacteria Highs and Lows: Review of the Maine Healthy Beaches Program

  • Esperanza Stancioff, University of Maine Cooperative Extension and Maine Sea Grant
  • Steve Jones, University of New Hampshire's Jackson Estuarine Laboratory
  • Matt Liebman, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

Esperanza Stancioff, Marine Educator and Coordinator of the Maine Healthy Beaches Program, will set the stage by giving us an overview of what we have been doing to monitor for bacteria at coastal swimming beaches in Maine; how our beaches fared in the 2006 season; and what our current testing methods do and do not tell us about beach pollution.

Dr. Steve Jones, Director of the Jackson Estuarine Laboratory at the University of New Hampshire, will explain what other methods are available for bacteria monitoring and pollution source tracking and what technologies are being developed to help us get more rapid and detailed results. Dr. Jones will discuss the pros and cons of these other technologies, and tell us what he has learned in his field studies in the region.

Matt Liebman, an Environmental Biologist who manages the U.S. EPA National Beaches Program, will let us know what is new at EPA for beach testing method research and update us on the agency's pilot projects and plans for the future.
