Figure 1. Aerial photographs of the approach to the Penobscot Narrows bridge before and after the realignment of U.S. Route 1/State Route 3. The top photograph was taken in 2004; the bottom photograph in 2006 before the center span of the bridge was completed. The western approach moved approximately 200 feet west into the hillside, and required removing nearly a million cubic feet of rock.
