It is also underlain by volcanic rocks, the Devonian Hedgehog Formation, unrelated to the Winterville volcanics on Haystack Mountain. Squapan Lake, in the middle distance, is underlain by more easily eroded Devonian sedimentary rocks (Roy, 1987).
