The Lobster Specialty Plate provides a way for vehicle owners to show their support for research, education and development of Maine’s signature product - the lobster. Maine also offers the commercial version of the lobster specialty plate to be used on vehicles with a registered weight over 10,000lbs.

Q: How much does the Lobster Specialty plate cost?

A: The fee is $20.00 in addition to the regular registration fee when first purchasing the plates. Each renewal is an additional $15.00. The plates will be issued in a unique numbering sequence, beginning with 101-AAA. There will be no low digit plates available.

Vanity plates are available in the Lobster Specialty plate series with a maximum of six characters. The fee is an additional $25.00 above the registration fee. Lobster Specialty vanity plates cannot duplicate a vanity plate that is already issued in another class of plate. You may search and order a vanity plate online.

Q: Where does the money go?

A: The Lobster Research, Education and Development Board receives $10.00 from each Lobster Specialty plate purchased or renewed and this amount is tax deductible.

Q: Where can the Lobster Specialty plate be purchased?

A: At all Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicle Branch Offices and at many town offices. If the plates are not available in your town, they can be purchased at the nearest branch office or by mailing a copy of your registration and a check for $20 ($45 for vanity) made payable to the Secretary of State to: Bureau of Motor Vehicles, Specialty Plate Clerk, 29 State House Station, Augusta, Maine 04333.
