What is the election returns collection?
This collection contains the returns of Maine elections presented in various configurations and formats.
Where did these documents come from?
These election returns are compiled from various publications of the Maine Secretary of State’s Bureau of Corporations, Elections &
Commissions (the Bureau). This includes printed documents collected by the Maine State Law and Legislative Library and housed in the Library’s Vertical File as well as documents and spreadsheets downloaded from the Bureau’s website. Additionally, certain documents and webpages were captured from past versions of the Bureau’s website found in the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine. Several of the files retrieved from the Secretary of State’s webpage have been converted to PDFs from Excel spreadsheets. In those cases, both the PDF and Excel versions of these files are available in this collection. This collection will be updated as returns become available to us.
When does the Maine election returns collection begin?
The collection runs from pre-1900 to the present. It will be updated as returns become available to us. Though expansive, this collection is not comprehensive and there are elections for which we have no records. For elections for which we don't have records, we would suggest contacting the Bureau of Corporations, Elections & Commissions or the State Archives.
How are they organized?
The drop down menu on the home page of this collection is organized chronologically by date of the election. Each election date has it's own page with all of the corresponding documents. All elections for that date will be contained on that page. For example, the November 3, 1964 page has election returns for referenda, state house, Congress, President, county offices and another document related to the election.
