Commission on Indigent Legal Services
Allocation: $4,591,008
Status: Pending
The Maine Commission on Indigent Legal Services (MCILS) provides representation to indigent criminal defendants, juvenile defendants, and children and parents in child protective cases. During the COVID-19 pandemic the number of cases pending before the courts for which MCILS is responsible has increased. The Maine Jobs & Recovery Plan invests $4,000,000 to enable MCILS to provide additional legal services for low-income Mainers and reduce the backlog of cases.
In addition, the Jobs Plan allocated $591,008 to the Maine Judicial Branch to support continued foreclosure assistance and community redevelopment legal assistance projects through the Maine Civil Legal Services Fund.
