AUGUSTA – On May 1, the Governor’s Office of Policy Innovation and the Future announced that the Town of Topsham has been selected as a recipient of a Community Action Grant award from the Community Resilience Partnership.
Topsham will receive an award of $69,038 to be used to support its Streets for People initiative, which aims to help create safe, efficient and accessible transportation networks for everyone.
Rep. Rafael Macias, D-Topsham, released the following statement applauding the funding:
“Thousands of commuters travel through Topsham daily as the town connects major thoroughfares such as I-295, U.S. Route 1, US 201 and State Routes 196 and 24. With the high number of motorists and the increasing amount of pedestrians, cyclists and other road users, this funding will help make sure safety and access are priorities when building and improving our roads.”
Topsham is actively working to create "streets for people" through its comprehensive plan which calls for adjusting zoning and establishing a long-range vision for the town that includes protecting its rural character and improving its streets.
This award is part of $8 million in this round of grant funding to help Maine communities protect people, businesses and infrastructure from flooding, storm surge and other climate effects. The funding, which was approved by the Legislature in the May 2024 supplemental budget, will support projects in 166 communities throughout the state.
The full list of projects can be found here.
Rep. Macias is serving his first term in the Maine House and represents House District 51, which includes the town of Topsham. He serves on the Labor Committee.
