Governor Baldacci Declares March 12-18, 2006 “Sunshine Week:  Your Right to Know”

WHEREAS, our government is one "of the people, by the people, and for the people"; and

WHEREAS, a truly democratic government must operate in the open to be responsive to the people; and

WHEREAS, the free flow of information ensures that our government acts fairly, lawfully, and truthfully; and

WHEREAS, transparency and open decision-making instill trust and confidence in our democracy; and

WHEREAS, equal access enhances people's ability to exercise their rights and creates a more active and enlightened citizenry,

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOHN E. BALDACCI, Governor of the State of Maine, do hereby proclaim March 12-18, 2006 as

SUNSHINE WEEK: YOUR RIGHT TO KNOW

throughout the State of Maine, and urge all citizens to recognize this observance.

In testimony whereof, I have caused the Great Seal of the State to be hereunto affixed GIVEN under my hand at Augusta this ninth day of March, Two Thousand and Six.
