What can you do?

Maine has many programs that promote literacy. Visit www.mainelibraries.com or your local library to find out if there's a program of interest to you.

  • In your own family, keep good books, magazines, and newspapers in your home.
  • Make reading a part of your daily family routine.
  • Read to and with your children at least twenty to thirty minutes a day.
  • Keep up your bedtime story reading.
  • Discuss each book you read together, make connections, and ask questions.
  • Talk with your children during meal times and throughout the day.
  • Share your stories, use your imagination, and don't be afraid to 'ham it up.'
  • Let children draw or paint. You might enjoy this activity as well.
  • Limit television, video games, and computer time.
  • Explore your local library together; everyone should have a library card.
  • Show children that reading is a fun and life-long activity by reading on your own.
  • Find out about literacy programs in your community and in your local library.
