Public Meeting To Be Held On Proposed Jet-Ski Ban on West Grand Lake

AUGUSTA, Maine – (June 11, 2001) On Wednesday June 27, 2001 at 6:30pm the Department of Conservation’s Land Use Regulation Commission will hold a public meeting at the Grand Lake Stream Town Office on a proposal to prohibit personal watercraft (PWC or jet-skis) on West Grand Lake. The purpose of this meeting is to hear from interested parties about this proposal. Anyone is welcome to speak to the Commission at this meeting.

The citizens of Grand Lake Stream, who voted at last year’s regular town meeting to propose this ban, submitted the proposal to the Commission. According to state law, municipalities may make these proposals through town meeting, which are then acted upon by the full state Legislature. Since West Grand Lake is within the Commission's jurisdiction, the Commission is required to approve any such proposals before sending them on to the Legislature.

"We'd like to hear from as many interested citizens as possible at this meeting. The Commission will use this testimony to decide whether to submit this proposal to the next session of the Legislature," noted John Williams, Executive Director.

Following the hearing, written comments may be submitted by U.S. Mail, fax, or email until Friday, July 6, 2001 at 5:00 pm.

The Land Use Regulation Commission is the planning and zoning board for 10.4 million acres of unorganized and deorganzied territory in Maine. Information about the agency is located on the Internet at www.state.me.us/doc
