Natural Communities and Ecosystems

The Maine Natural Areas Program has classified 98 natural community types and 24 ecosystems. Some of these are rare in the state, others are more common. We maintain a database with information on the rare communities and ecosystems and the outstanding examples of more common types. For more information, see the Natural Communities and Ecosystems page.

Rare Plants

MNAP currently tracks 352 plant species that are rare in Maine. For more information see the Rare Plants page.

Invasive Plants

MNAP does not currently have an active Invasive Plants program, but we have information, fact sheets, and links available on our Invasive Plants page.

Rare Animals

Information about Maine's rare, threatened, and endangered animal species is maintained by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (MDIFW). For information on the rare animals of Maine, please see their web site.
