Figure 6. A quartzite bed showing the characteristic that leads many visitors to mistakenly think the rocks are petrified wood. This photograph looks down on a nearly horizontal bed and the mineral cleavage formed by the alignment of mineral grains cuts the bedding at a low angle. The intersections of bedding and cleavage produce this false wood grain texture.
