Figure 5. Large scale fold in beds of the Kittery Formation. When the two sides of the fold are close to horizontal, as in this case, geologists call it a recumbent fold. Folds like these are important parts of the evidence for the continental collision of Avalon and North America around 400 million years ago. This fold is exposed in a nearly vertical face that faces toward the southwest along the southwestern part of the shore. Many other smaller folds can be seen in other exposures.
