 2007 Project Canopy Grant Summaries

Each year, with USDAForest Service funds, Project Canopy provides communities throughout Maine with matching grants to assist in community forestry efforts. Grants are divided into three categories: planning and education, planting and maintenance and inner-city improvement. This year, 35 grants were awarded and will serve to improve the health and vitality of Maine’s community forests & trees.

City of Augusta

Inner City Improvement Grant
This planting project will improve the appearance and quality of urban forests within inner city neighborhoods and provide a mosaic of green landscape along streets, common areas and pocket parks in the historic waterfront downtown area and Mill Park to the Market Place Shopping Center, Civic Center, Business Park and University of Maine and Bond Brook Park.


City of Bangor

Planning and Education Grant
This planning and education grant will expand Bangor’s Grandview Nursery. In addition to enlarging the planting beds, it will also incorporate an adjacent lot and doubling its size, extend the irrigation system, add educational signage, and create space between plantings to efficiently dig up trees for replanting.

Inner City Improvement Grant
Project Canopy funds will support a public strategic planning meeting, update and enhance current tree inventory data, and support tree planting in a barren arterial corridor of the inner city that connects a major arterial street and a low-income neighborhood to the downtown.

Planting and Maintenance Grant
This grant will allow Bangor to fund a contractor to perform bucket truck pruning and trimming of the mature trees that are too tall for the City Forestry Department to address.


City of Bath

Planning and Education Grant
This grant will enable the City of Bath to produce a 24-page booklet/arboricultural educational reference using selected photos from its Community Forest Photo Contest.

Planting and Maintenance Grant
Funds will support tree planting in the Bath Police Department Parking Lot, at the Sagadahoc County Court House and will create a demonstration site for home orcharding and yardscaping.


City of Belfast

Planting and Maintenance Grant
Belfast will plant 12 trees for the east approach to Belfast footbridge and other east side locations to enhance aesthetics.


Belfast Bay Watershed Coalition

Planning and Education Grant
This grant project will develop a 2-mile section of a community foot trail which will make the City and County forestland accessible to citizens and will encourage youth and others to spend more time outdoors in healthy activity and become familiar with the natural landscapes where they live.


City of Bucksport

Planting and Maintenance Grant
The project calls for 41 trees to be planted on a new public road in order to shield an industrial site from a residential area.


Town of Brunswick

Planning and Education Grant
Through the creation of a pamphlet on a self-guided walking tour of trees in the downtown area, this project aims to increase public awareness and appreciation of the community forest.


City of Calais

Planting and Maintenance Grant
Calais would like to replace street trees on downtown Main Street, add new trees on Main Street to improve Triangle Park, plant a living Christmas tree in Heritage Park and plant disease resistant elms.


Central Aroostook Soil and Water Conservation District

Planning and Education Grant
This project will support a Hazard Tree Inventory and Management Plan in Mantle Lake Park and will ultimately provide a recreation area safe from falling trees and limbs. CASWCD will also receive funds to create an engineered layout for two trails and bridges through the forested area adjacent to Mantle Lake Park.


Town of China

Planning and Education Grant
By inventorying existing street trees and developing a plan for future tree planting, this project aims to enhance the village areas, create an environmental friendly landscape and promote tree planting, especially along waterbodies.


Town of Dover-Foxcroft

Planning and Education Grant
Project Canopy funds will be used to hire a forestry professional to complete an inventory of town-owned trees and will help the town better manage their community green spaces and existing tree inventory.


Ecotat Garden and Arboretum

Planning and Education Grant
This project will establish a walking review of thirty native tree species, mature and developing, each in its natural setting.


City of Gardiner

Planting and Maintenance Grant
The project consists of planting nine new trees in downtown Gardiner. Tree pruning will also be done in the downtown mini-park.


City of Hallowell

Planning and Education Grant
Hallowell Tree Board will use the grant to fund a GPS-based inventory of each tree planted from Ice Storm funds and will then create a series of hard copy maps for the Tree Board and City.


L.C. Bates Museum

Planning and Education Grant
This grant project will assist in the creation of a Good Care for Young Trees  program, serving to inform the community about the care of immature urban trees. Science educators will develop and present the programs.


Lewiston-Auburn Community Forestry Board

Planting and Maintenance Grant
Project Canopy funds would support LACFB in conducting a 75:25 cost-share planting program within neighborhoods of both Lewiston and Auburn.


Town of Livermore

Planting and Maintenance Grant
Livermore will plant new trees, maintain existing trees, remove brush, and label trees on town public property for educational and recreational purposes


New Forest Institute

Planning and Education Grant
This grant project will support the development of a comprehensive management plan and assist in planting and maintaining a 5-acre edible forest garden for educational, demonstration and research purposes.


Old Canada Road Scenic Byway

Planning and Education Grant
This project will create a recreational trail & interpretive center through 140-acres in Bingham and will detail the culture and history of the Old Canada Road area, the Upper Kennebec and Moose River Valleys.


Town of Old Orchard Beach

Planting and Maintenance Grant
This project will fund 19 trees and will create an “Avenue of Trees” along East Grand Avenue and Old Orchard Street.


Pemaquid Watershed Association, Inc.

Planning and Education Grant
By developing a resource stewardship plan, this project will integrate natural resource stewardship and educational outreach to promote forest health on the 40-acre Bearce-Allen Preserve in Bristol, Maine.


Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District

Planning and Education Grant
This project aims to create better access to the PCSWCD’s 180-acre demonstration forest through the design, development and placement of directional signs on roads and through the creation of educational brochures.


Town of Pittsfield

Planting and Maintenance Grant
This project will fund the planting of 9 trees around Mill Pond Loop, a designated walking trail through downtown Pittsfield that consists of four parks located in the vicinity of a large central pond.


City of Portland

Planning and Education Grant
This grant project will inventory and create a management plan for 4 forest areas, totaling 141-acres, including: Mayor Baxter Woods, Baxter Pines, Pine Grove Park and the Evergreen Cemetery woodlands.


Region Two, School of Applied Technology

Planning and Education Grant
This grant will support a professional forest engineer to design a woodlot access system for the school woodlot and will provide a forest design and BMP training session for High School students.


City of Saco

Inner City Improvement Grant
This grant project will enable Saco to purchase computer software specifically designed for tree inventorying & data collection directly in the field.


Town of Sanford

Planting and Maintenance Grant
Sanford students will work under the instruction of a horticulture instructor to dig up nursery stock and replant them in nearby Gowen Park.


Town of Scarborough

Planning and Education Grant
Funds will assist Scarborough in leveraging its GIS and computerized maintenance management software to inventory trees in the Town’s right of way and perform preventative maintenance on these trees.


University of Southern Maine

Planning and Education Grant
By expanding their arboretum and replacing invasive Norway maples, USM will enhance educational offerings associated with the arboretum. Educational outreach materials will be designed to instruct the community on successful methods for species selection, planting and maintenance, and will be available in print and online.


Vital Pathways

Planning and Education Grant
Vital Pathways will use Project Canopy funds to develop a Comprehensive Forest Management Plan on the Bird Farm, a 122-acre farm purchased by Houlton High School District in 1948.


Town of Wells

Planting and Maintenance Grant
With Project Canopy funding, Wells will continue planting more Princeton Elms along Route 1.
