 2004 Project Canopy Grant Summaries

City of Bangor

This grant will allow the City of Bangor to prune small and large trees in the most urbanized portions of the city. This project is being conducted in coordination with Keep Bangor Beautiful's city revitalization efforts.

City of Bath

The City of Bath plans to work with 9 teachers and 320 students in 5 schools to conduct a public tree inventory and establish a forest health monitoring site..

City of Belfast

In an effort to restore Belfast's tree canopy, Green Streets, Belfast's volunteer committee, will plant approximately twenty 2-inch caliper street trees along residential and business streets within the city center.

City of Biddeford

This grant will help Biddeford transform 65 Bacon Street, a weed-infested vacant lot, into a pocket park. This project is part of Biddeford's effort to revitalize the city's inner-city neighborhoods.

City of Calais

This project will support Calais's efforts to produce a street tree inventory, create a community forestry management plan, and plant trees in the revitalizing Waterfront Park.

City of South Portland

By updating the city's street tree inventory and using new technology and software to integrate the inventory with the city' daily tree maintenance activities, South Portland will increase the effectiveness of their urban forestry program.

Town of Brunswick

Through tree planting and maintenance, this project will improve the downtown business district on Main Street and Lower Mall. This project is a partnership between the Town of Brunswick, the Brunswick Downtown Assoc., and the Village Improvement Assoc.

Town of Kennebunkport

This project will enhance Kennebunkport's current street tree inventory by incorporating a GIS mapping component. The improved inventory will enable Kennebunkport to more effectively schedule pruning and maintenance activities, and analyze the effectiveness of Dutch elm disease treatment programs.

Town of Lisbon

Over the past year, Lisbon has been working to complete a street tree inventory. This project will enable the city to plant trees in a number of high priority sites identified by the inventory.

Town of Manchester

The Teaching Trees project supports tree planting near two of Manchester's schools for the purpose of beautification, and natural science education. Students will study the trees over time as part of their natural science curriculum.

Town of Veazie

This project will support the town's efforts to control invasive species in the town forest. Veazie will use a variety of control methods, document treatment success, and present their findings to the public.
