The Mission of the Pine Tree State Arboretum is to promote the knowledge and appreciation of trees, shrubs, and other plants for enjoyment, inspiration, and recreation; for scientific research; and for educational and aesthetic purposes. The Pine Tree State Arboretum is an independent non profit corporation 501 c(3)

Education
The Johnson Outdoor Education Center has eleven outdoor classrooms. School and community groups can schedule environmental education programs. (click here for more information)

Recreation
The Arboretum is open from dawn to dusk, seven days a week, free of charge. The five-mile, year round trail system is open to hiking, jogging, bird watching, non-motorized biking horseback riding, and cross-country skiing on groomed winter trails. Enjoy a picnic, take some photos, look for birds (over 150 species have been spotted). Pets are permitted on a leash. (click here for a trail map)

Plant Collection
The plant collection contains over 300 species or varieties of trees and shrubs. The forested portion of the Arboretum is a certified Tree Farm Demonstration Area containing many of Maine's native trees.

Volunteers
Volunteers are essential to the Arboretum's mission. Volunteers are needed for landscaping, garden care, trail work, and educational programs. All are welcome and training is provided. Community service projects are available for school and community groups. Call 621-0031 for information on how you can become a volunteer!
