Every year, during the third full week in May, Project Canopy, the Maine Forest Service, and communities throughout Maine celebrate Arbor Day. Arbor Day is an American Holiday, started by J. Sterling Morton in Nebraska back in 1872, and is now celebrated by all fifty states. Maine hosts a variety of activities during Arbor Week, including tree planting events, school programs, educational workshops, and a state celebration held at the State House Hall of Flags.

The state celebration is an opportunity for Project Canopy and the Maine Forest Service to honor excellence in community forestry and forest stewardship. Awards are given to Maine’s Tree City USA communities, the Arbor Day poster contest award winner, and Community Forestry Excellence Award.
