White Pine - Mixed Hardwoods Forest Ecosystem

This ecosystem lies between the deciduous-dominated forests of southern Maine and the spruce-fir or northern hardwood forests of northern Maine, a belt often referred to as Transitional Forest. It is characterized by white pine and hemlock as the most widespread conifers; important hardwood species include red oak, beech, sugar maple, and red maple. This ecosystem is almost entirely limited to terrestrial communities, although it may include vernal pools and intermittent streams.
