IMPORTANT NOTICE:
Beginning on January 1, 2024, the Electricians' Examining Board will require licensees to use the online application system to apply for all permits, licenses, exams and renewals. Using the online system allows staff to process applications more quickly and efficiently. This will decrease wait times and will allow applicants to track the status of their applications.
As a result of this change, after January 1, 2024, applications received by fax, mail or email will not be processed and will not be returned to the applicant.

Purpose
The Electricians' Examining Board was established to protect the public from hazards arising from the use of electricity for light, heat, power and other purposes through the regulation of electricians in Maine.
The primary responsibility of the Board is to ensure the competency of electricians through examination; to issue licenses to those qualified to hold the title of Master electrician, Journeyman electrician, Limited electrician, Apprentice electrician, Journeyman-in-training electrician or Helper electrician; to investigate complaints of noncompliance with or violations of the law and board rules; and to issue permits.

Proposed Board Rulemaking
Chapter 120, Electrical Installation Standards (repeal and replace)
The proposed rulemaking would repeal the current Chapter 120, Electrical Installation Standards, and replace with a rule with the same title and in the same location that adopts and incorporates by reference into board rule the 2023 National Electrical Code, National Fire Protection Association (“NFPA”) standard #30 (“2023 NEC”) subject to certain amendments and exclusions.
The proposed rule adopts the 2023 NEC with amendments to the following: Article 90.4(D) New Products, Constructions, or Materials; Article 100, Dormitory Unit; Article 210.8(A)(6), Dwelling Units; Article 210.8(B)(2), Other than Dwelling Units; Article 210.8(F), Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupter Protection for Personnel, Outdoor Outlets; Article 230.2(E), Number of Services, Identification; Article 230.85(B), Disconnects; Article 334.10, Uses Permitted; Article 338.12(B)(1) and (2), Uses Not Permitted, Underground Service-Entrance Cable; Article 400.12(4), Uses Not Permitted; Article 409.6(C), Receptacles in Damp or Wet Locations, Bathtub and Shower Space; and Article 702.4(A)(2)(a), Capacity and Rating, System Capacity, Automatic Load Connection. The Board does not adopt Article 334.12(A)(2).

Chapter 180, Licensure by Endorsement (new)
The Electricians’ Examining Board is proposing to adopt Chapter 180 that outlines a pathway for licensure if a person is licensed by another jurisdiction within the United States that maintains substantially equivalent licensing standards pursuant to 10 M.R.S. § 8003-H.

Effective March 1, 2019, the Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation (OPOR) will no longer issue paper license verifications. License verifications are available, free of charge, on OPOR’s official database, https://www.pfr.maine.gov/ALMSOnline/ALMSQuery/Welcome.aspx?board=4220. This database is updated in real time as changes occur. The Office of Professional and Occupational Regulation considers this information to be a secure, primary source for license verification.

Requirement to Report Convictions and Changes of Contact Information Within 10 Days of the Occurrence
The Maine State Bureau of Identification contains an online site to provide electronic access to request criminal history record maintained by the Maine State Police, State Bureau of Identification. This records search will provide you with all the conviction and adjudication information for crimes committed within the State of Maine that the Bureau of Identification currently has on record, as well as pending cases less than one year old.

- Graduates from a secondary school career and technical education electrical program are qualified to sit for the journeyman electrician examination and are credited 1,000 hours in the field of electrical installations toward the requisite 8,000 hours to become licensed.
