The Machias Bay Area includes Machias and a number of neighboring towns located in Washington County. In this area you will find picturesque harbors dotted with fishing boats, meandering rivers, historic sites pre-dating the Revolutionary War, and bustling classic New England towns.

Whether your ideal vacation includes a round of golf with an ocean view, fishing, a summer crafts festival, sea kayaking, shopping for treasures, hiking, visiting with puffins, boating or just sitting back and relaxing in a quiet place, you're ready to enjoy life "Down East" in the Machias Bay Area. Numerous inland lakes and rivers provide excellent opportunities for canoeing, fishing and swimming.

A remarkable natural resource, low bush wild blueberries grow on enormous fields called barrens. The land is covered with white blossoms in the spring, blueberries in the summer and brilliant red foliage in autumn. The blueberry harvest is a traditional late summer event, and is highlighted by the popular Machias Blueberry Festival, held the third weekend in August.

Splendid fall foliage and moderate temperatures make the Machias Bay Area a worthy destination for autumn excursions. And winter brings out the adventurous for cross country skiing, fishing and snowmobiling.
