Also known as Senator Warren Brewster Airport, this unattended airport was constructed in 1941 as an auxiliary airport to the former Dow Field in Bangor. Corporate officials on their way to and from local industries in the area and seasonal residents frequent the airport. In addition, the Dexter Aero Club, an active flying club, has two aircraft stationed at the airport. The pilots, who first organized about 30 years ago, share the experience of flying at a more affordable cost by pooling their resources.
Dexter is located along the Moosehead Trail (Route 7) in the southwestern portion of Penobscot County, about 30 miles northwest of Bangor. The Moosehead Trail takes travelers from I-95 in Newport north toward Dover-Foxcroft and the Moosehead Lake Region, but not without offering broad views of the recreational and commercial offerings of Dexter.
Lake Wassookeag, a 1,062 acre lake, named by the Penobscot Indians for "shining water," borders the business district. The lake is a destination for fishermen in summer and winter. Dexter also has a municipal 9-hole golf course and driving range, a public beach, camping and picnic areas and a small regional airport. Snowmobiling, fishing, watersports, and hunting are popular activities. Dexter is the original home and namesake of the world famous Dexter Shoe Company.
