Governor and Department of Professional and Financial Regulation Highlight Upcoming Seventh Annual 'Fostering Financial Education in Maine Schools Conference

Governor Paul R. LePage and a coalition of government, nonprofit and corporate leaders are encouraging educators to consider taking part in the 7th Annual Fostering Financial Education in Maine Schools Conference. This resource-rich learning opportunity will take place May 6, 2016 at the Augusta Civic Center.

Organized by the Maine Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy, the event is funded largely through grants and private contributions. Providing a variety of free financial education resources for K-12 and college-age students, the conference will feature workshops presented by classroom teachers and financial literacy experts.

Financial literacy among young people benefits Maines families, communities and economy, Governor LePage said. This annual conference gives teachers valuable tools and resources needed to share financial information and instill life-long money management skills.

The Office of Securities is proud to join the Maine Jump$tart Coalition each year to support this important educational event, Securities Administrator Judy Shaw said. Basic financial literacy is essential for young people to achieve their goals.

This statewide event brings together educators, administrators, and Maine's best financial literacy resources to provide education and raise awareness of the importance of lifelong financial wellness. Conference registration waivers for the $25 registration fee and substitute teacher reimbursements are available. The Office of Securities is part of Maines Department of Professional and Financial Regulation (www.maine.gov/pfr). Maine Jump$tart is the state affiliated chapter of the national JumpStart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy, a non-profit coalition of organizations dedicated to improving the financial literacy of pre-kindergarten through college-age youth. www.jumpstart.org.
