Reps. Duchesne and Dunphy: You may be missing money

State treasurer releases unclaimed property list

February 6, 2015

AUGUSTA – Reps. Bob Duchesne, D-Hudson, and Michelle Dunphy, D-Old Town, urge Maine residents to check the state database for unclaimed property.

“In 2014, Mainers lost over $20 million in unclaimed property,” Dunphy said. “These funds could be from unpaid wages, dividends or checking accounts. For a range of reasons, the owner has not been successfully located, and we want to fix that.”

Every year, the Office of the State Treasurer releases its annual list of unclaimed property, which consists of money and other personal assets that are considered lost or abandoned when an owner cannot be located.

“Many people are unaware they have unclaimed property,” said Duchesne. “We want to make sure this property is returned to its rightful owners, so take a moment to see if you’re on the list.”

There is no fee to process an unclaimed property claim. Unclaimed property does not include real estate, animals or vehicles.

Residents may go online to search for unclaimed property at the Office of the Maine State Treasurer’s website, Office of the State Treasurer.
