ROUTE 3 CONSTRUCTION PAUSED FOR COLUMBUS DAY WEEKEND
Bar Harbor - Work on the reconstruction of Route 3 north of Bar Harbor will be paused from the end of the day on Thursday, October 4th through the Columbus Day weekend, with work resuming on Tuesday, October 9th. A one-way detour loop will remain in effect throughout the holiday weekend with traffic inbound to Bar Harbor on Route 3 and outbound detoured to Park Loop Road.
The reconstruction of Route 3 is continuing into the fall as planned, most recently including milling and grading the roadway from the Bluffs to the Acadia National Park entrance, installing catch basins and grates from Crooked Road to the Park entrance, and surface paving from Eagle Lake Road to Duck Brook. MaineDOT emphasizes that access to all businesses and attractions along Route 3 will continue to be maintained through the fall.
When completed, the reconstruction of Route 3 will result in paved shoulders for bicyclists and pedestrians, some new sidewalks will be constructed and existing sidewalks will be upgraded to meet ADA standards. Safer crossings will be created utilizing electronic crossing signs; A new multi-use path will be constructed along part of the roadway; The intersection at Mt. Desert St. and West St. will be improved, as will overall drainage and runoff management.
MaineDOT invites Bar Harbor area residents, visitors and drivers to stay informed about the project by visiting mainedot.gov and by signing up for email alerts.
