Cumberland Street In Westbrook Remains Closed

WESTBROOK, Maine – The Cumberland Mills Bridge in Westbrook will remain closed through the night and through tomorrow’s morning commute. A detour utilizing Bridge Street and Main Street is in effect.

Crews placed quick-setting concrete and rebar in the repaired area, but the concrete can not yet support vehicle traffic, so a decision was made to keep the bridge closed. A decision on when the bridge will open will be made after the concrete repairs are re-inspected tomorrow (Thursday) morning.

MaineDOT maintenance crews closed the Cumberland Mills Bridge in Westbrook last night in order to make repairs to a large pothole. The bridge carries Cumberland Street over the Presumpscot River in Westbrook.

In order to repair the 2’ x 3’ pothole, crews had to remove the deteriorated concrete surrounding the pothole, opening up a 7’ x 9’ area. Crews reinforced the area with steel rebar and filled the it with quick-setting concrete. MaineDOT crews discovered the pothole at approximately midnight on Tuesday night.

Cumberland Street is currently closed at the bridges and traffic is being detoured off Cumberland Street to Bridge Street and Main Street.

The Cumberland Mills Bridge is an 80’ long bridge that was built in 1954, and is scheduled to be replaced next year. Approximately 15,000 vehicles per day utilize the bridge.
