Paving Work Continues Northbound On Tukeys Bridge - Overnight Ramp Closures On Tap For I-295 In Freeport

PORTLAND, Maine -- Construction crews plan to continue mill-and-fill paving operations on Interstate 295 Northbound beginning Sunday evening, September 11 through Wednesday night, September 14, weather permitting. Crews will focus on the stretch of highway between Franklin Street and Veranda Street exits, and will close one lane to travel to facilitate paving.

The work, which will take place between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m., will also necessitate on and off-ramp closures at Exit 8 (Washington Avenue) and an on-ramp closure at Exit 9 (Baxter Boulevard) on Wednesday evening, although these may not be for the entire night.

In addition, ramp closures are planned for I-295 in Freeport beginning Sunday evening, September 11. The following is a list of scheduled ramp closures through Thursday.

Sunday, September 11

-Exit 24 off northbound, closed 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. -Exit 22 on northbound, closed 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Monday, September 12

-Exit 24 on northbound, closed 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. -Exit 20 off southbound, closed 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Tuesday, September 13

-Exit 22 on southbound, closed 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. -Exit 20 off southbound, closed 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Wednesday, September 14

-Exit 22 off southbound, closed 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. -Exit 20 on southbound, closed 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Thursday, September 15

-Exit 22 on southbound, closed 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Suggested alternate routes when specific ramps are closed are:

When Exit 20 is closed, use either Exit 22 (Mallett Drive) in Freeport or Exit 17 (Route One) in Yarmouth to enter Interstate 295.

When Exit 22 is closed use either Exit 20 (Desert Road) or Exit 24 (Route 196) to exit/enter Interstate 295.

When Exit 24 is closed, use Exit 22 (Mallett Drive) in Freeport to exit/enter Interstate 295 Northbound.

The highway and infrastructure improvements accompanying these ramp closings are weather dependent, and the schedule may shift to the next available evening if wet weather intervenes.

With the final phases of the I-295 project stretching into early fall, MaineDOT continues to stress the possibility of traffic backups during peak traffic hours.

This effort is part of a substantial I-295 repair and improvement project that will be ongoing through the fall of this year. Roadway and bridge repair work has been structured to minimize the impact on motorists while improving the safety and enjoyment of traveling one of Maine’s most popular highways.

MaineDOT appreciates the patience of all motorists during this construction period, and also asks motorists to drive safely through all work zones.
