(AUGUSTA)— Over a dozen gas stations will soon be displaying Environmental Leader flags. The businesses have voluntarily earned the certification as environmental leaders by reviewing all aspects of their operation to ensure that they meet or exceed all environmental requirements.

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) verifies each facility’s findings before bestowing the award to the gas station. Stations that are found to be in 100% compliance with all environmental requirements are eligible to display the Environmental Leader logo, and fly their flags for the three-year period of their certification.

The 3 X 5 foot white flags are emblazoned with the words “Environmental Leader” in black over a gray outline of the state of Maine with a stylized forest green slash.

“We know there is public support for “environmentally friendly” businesses and this is one way we can publicize who those businesses are,” said DEP project manager Roy Krout.

Consumers can do their part by looking for the “Environmental Leader” logo where they purchase their gasoline. As word of the program spreads, Krout expects more stations will volunteer to participate in the program statewide. “Many stations may be eligible to fly the flag, it just comes down to contacting us, performing a self evaluation on their own and we perform a final check-up,” according to Krout.

Recertification can be applied for following the three-year period.
