Certified Interpreter/Transliterator of American Sign Language and English

"Certified Interpreter/Interpreter"means a person licensed by the Department of Professional and Financial Regulation who provides:

  • English-based transliterating, which includes, but is not limited to, conveying a message by visual representations of English language, such as manually coded English and oral transliteration. This process conveys information from one mode of English to another mode of English;
  • American Sign Language-based interpreting, which is the process of conveying information between American Sign Language and English; or
  • Intermediary interpreting, which means interpreting services rendered by a deaf interpreter to facilitate communication between another deaf person and another licensed interpreter or between two or more deaf persons.

How to apply

  • License Fee $200.
  • Payment of a $21 Fee for a State Police criminal background (SBI) check
  • Make check payable to "Maine State Treasurer."
  • Annual - June 30

Renewal fees and information

  • License Fee $200.
  • Late Fee $50. (if applicable)
  • Make check payable to: "Maine State Treasurer."
  • Annual - June 30
  • Completed Application.
  • A late fee of $50 is assessed for licenses renewed after the June 30license expiration date.
  • A person who submits an application for renewal more than 90 days after the license expiration date is subject to all requirements governing new applicants and is required to reapply with an original license application, documentation and fees.
  • Renewal applications are emailed approximately 60 days prior to the license expiration date.
